Drifting lands game7/3/2023 ![]() ![]() In this case, you can use credits to upgrade your ship’s statistics (Navigation, Structure and Power), basic infrastructure (guns, armour, etc.), as well as to choose from the massive number of skills available. ![]() The game has a powerful RPG presence, that allows you a magnanimous amount of customization and building. ![]() If you’re not a shmup person, this is definitely going to be a playable version for you, more so than for a hardcore shmup fan. Though the game is relatively wholesome for a shooter, it is not yet ready to make its mark as anything else due to a dull story premise, and repetition that undermine what’s good about the game overtime. The game is set in the lives of nomadic tribes that fight to survive in a shattered world that rises from a cataclysm (yeah, the visuals are gorgeous).īesides being stuck between petty tribe politics, the purpose of your livelihood lies somewhere between being the tribe’s only capable bitch, and making your mark in a stunning bullet hell galaxy. The combination packaged in Drifting Lands by Alkemi, though imperfect, is a remarkable attempt. All in all, however, this is an excellent take on a classic genre. The promise of a Shoot Em’ Up (shmup) game with ARPG elements is one that is not easy to fulfill. Backgrounds can be confusing and enemy scaling can feel a bit brutal at times. Overall, I think Drifting Lands is a tremendous title that’s well worth the price point.ĭrifting Lands is an entertaining take on the “shmup” genre that adds roguelike elements to spice up the old formula. Other than that issue, the game is great and really amazing to behold. As a result, I never really felt like I was getting more powerful. Personally, one issue I ran into, which could easily have been user error, is that the enemies scale really high. It’s something other people have mentioned, though, and it might just be something that affects a small number of people. One potential problem is that the backgrounds can get disorienting at times but it was something I was never really affected by. It’s almost hard to believe that this game only had a five-man team working on it as they did a fantastic job. Do you want to just tank a bunch of damaging moves? Maybe you want the ability to dash and teleport around to dodge stuff? Such are options are available for your perusal, including a very helpful ship repair that’s quite useful if you like to tank bullets to the face.ĭrifting Lands’ art style, meanwhile, is absolutely gorgeous. This is arguably the most exciting part of customization as you get to pick how you want to fight. In addition to a selection of ships and weapons, you also get access to some skills that you can customize. Maybe my old-school Ikaruga skills are still alive somewhere inside of me. It’s a choice that actually worked out really well for me as I actually didn’t die a lot at first. Wet tissue paper.Īs someone who’s shmup skills these days can be best described as just “aight,” I personally went with the extra tanky Sentinel. On the opposite end of the spectrum is a ship that’s fast but also has the sturdiness of tissue paper. One ship, for example, is more tanky but also moves more slowly. Each one has unique traits that differentiate it from the other options, including certain advantages and disadvantages. Upon starting the game, you get to choose between three main ships. There are plenty of different weapons to try out as well, which helps add variety to the gameplay. In my case, for example, I found myself enjoying a rail cannon-type weapon that charges up and deals solid amounts of damage. At the same time, dying will make you lose all the loot you have gathered from that specific run so there’s extra incentive to do well.Ĭompletionists will be happy to know that there is a vast amount of loot to pick up in the game. Basically, you’re tasked with going out on your ship to transport items and destroy threats that encroach on the space station you are on.įans of hectic “bullet hell” games will feel right at home with Drifting Lands’ shooting as the game throws out massive amounts of enemies at you. Storytelling is pretty straightforward as most shmups tend to be. The fusion of these multiple genres is a big reason why I was extremely excited to try Drifting Lands. I am a big fan, however, of “rougelikes” and games with action RPG-type elements. Exhibit A would be “Drifting Lands” by Akemi, which manages to do this extremely well.Īdmittedly, the shoot-em-up or “shmup” genre has always been hit or miss for me. One of my favorite things to see as a gamer is when a developer tries to switch up a genre and manages to nail the approach just right.
